The Harlem Renaissance movement was part of the literary, artistic and intellectual renewal of the African-American culture of the 1920s and 1930s. Its influence spread well beyond Harlem's frontiers – the neighbourhood was then nicknamed « the world capital of Black culture » - and touched the intellectual elite throughout the world. Harlem's YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) is a landmark in African-American culture. It was meant for Black Americans at a time when most hotels and YMCAs had a « Whites only » policy.
