
Published in the early 1920s, « The Messenger » was a political and literary magazine meant for African-American readers. It contributed to the development of the Harlem Renaissance and to the acknowledgment of Black American culture. The May 1923 issue was titled « The New Negro » and featured the black silhouette of Rodin's « Thinker ».
